All right computer nerds...

Time for yet another thread for you to show off your vast knowledge. Just got a new laptop... This one:

Dual 2.8s, 8 gig ram, RAID terabyte HD, 17-incher. Windows 7 of course.

SO, the question for all yall is what are the funny little programs you love that are cheap or free that I should put on this bad boy? Media players, unzippers, plugins, etc. According to our IT guy Windows 7 should unzip .ZIP and .RAR automatically, do I need more than that? I've got Audacity for simple sound editing, is there something better? I've got basic security... I think, at work. Not sure how that works when I'm at home and not plugged into the network.

Also would like a nice image viewer/organizer. I'd like to add metadata to my reference folders, and I can do that in Adobe Bridge, but that's a stupidly cumbersome program.

7-zip, fuck windows extractor. :)

And it's either free, or cheap.. but use Avast. I'm sure you saw Rev's post on that.

Use Foxit for pdf files. Adobe reader is a very bloated and annoying mess.

Not sure if you do any coding or anything with your programs, but if you are.. Notepad++

I agree with Tyler. 7zip compresses files soooo much better. I use SumatraPDF (after you mentioned it previously, Tyler). The newest version is much smoother than the pre-v1.0. I hate, hate, hate Adobe. Audacity is all I use for audio editing too. And I mentioned in Rev's thread that I preferred Avira AntiVir (completely free) for antivirus. I've never had a virus on my computer (except the ones I purposely put on) even when I didn't have any sort of antivirus software. I'll never pay for a program when there are free alternatives.

I've had trouble with Avira...just sayin. In the right hands a computer may never get a virus, antivirus installed or not...but I have seen Avira let them through.

and I should scold you harshly for buying a Dellianware...

unless your company paid for it...

I'll take that as a veiled compliment :P

I honestly was complimenting you sir.

Why thank you ::blushes::

Josh, I use foobar2000 for playing music and VLC media player for any videos. I must admit the Windows 7 media player looks mighty nice (I haven't really tried it out yet). Idk if you convert you music or video files, but I use Super C for that. All of these apps are free, of course.

Well, my company paid for half of it. Does that make you feel better?

I've got Foxit Reader. I'll look into the 7zip or whatever. Any other advices would be appreciated.

I'll second VLC.. and I used default Windows Media Player until I got a Zune and had to use that software (which is crap)..

Hm, what else.. Get Battlefield Bad Company 2? Great game, blows CoD MW2 away. Don't buy Assassins Creed 2, or any other Ubisoft DRM games..

I'll assume you aren't actually developing any web stuff, and recommend using Chrome as your browser. Install Adblock +..

Even if Dropbox doesn't seem useful to you, get it. It comes in extremely handy when sharing files with friends / coworkers, and sharing between computers that aren't networked. I could use a couple more gigs of space, so if any of you want to use that referral link above, you'd be helping a brotha out. (It's free, and it really is a great program)
